Will God Make A Way?

I heard these lines in a song recently at church: “Where there is no way, You make a way. Where no one else can reach us, You find us.”

Having lived as a practical agnostic for many years in my Christian life, I wouldn’t have sung those lines with enthusiasm. There was too much of a disconnect between the hard realities I was facing in my life and God’s lack of involvement in them (from my perspective). If asked, “Will God make a way?,” I would have answered “In theory, ‘Yes,” but practically speaking, ‘No.”

Fortunately, I am no longer trapped in that mindset and can see how God is showing up in so many ways that I never realized before.

When Jesus said “I am the Way…” He meant it literally. Not just for eternity’s sake, but to meet us in the details of our daily life. God repeats this idea in the Old Testament:

  • “I will lead the blind by a way they do not know, in paths they do not know I will guide them.” (Isa. 42:16)
  • “Thus says the Lord, Who makes a way through the sea and a path through the mighty waters…”(Isa. 43:16)
  • “I will even make a roadway in the wilderness…” (Isa. 43:19)
  • “I will go before you to make the rough places smooth…” (Isa. 45:2)
  • “I am the Lord your God, who teaches you to profit, Who leads you in the way you should go.” (Isa. 48:17)

God even goes so far to say that He will hold us by the hand in our life.

I will also hold you by the hand and watch over you… (Isa. 42:6)

For a father or mother to do that for a child, they have intimate proximity and awareness of what is going on. This is the image God is giving us.

In the midlife years, our faith in the Lord’s intimate involvement in our life can take a hit. We get weary on the journey. We are confronted by many unexpected difficulties that seem to block our path like mountains. Yet God says He is holding our hand and is the way through every heart wrenching challenge.

When we grasp this truth our experience with God will be profoundly deepened. Rather than taking a seat on the sidelines, we will respond to His invitation to join the action on the field.

Our years of greatest influence will be at hand. Others will be inspired that God can make a way for them too.

Do you believe that God will make a way for you and is holding your hand?
