The Story of Your Life

Ever thought of your life as a story?

Maybe a love story? A drama? A mystery? A thriller? A work of science fiction? A battlefield? A story of triumph and tragedy?

A strong case can be made that it’s “all of the above!” You are in the midst of living out an epic novel that contains more plot lines than you can keep track of!

In some enthralling way, you and God are co-authors together. He has storylines that are complex, adventurous, heart thumping, danger-filled, scary, momentous and full of joy. He loves last minute rescues, being “saved by the bell,” overcoming insurmountable odds, and defeating powerful enemies.

What’s more, He invites you to join in helping write this heart-tugging story, but gives you veto power to take it another direction.

Habakkuk was a nervous co-author with God. He didn’t like the story he was reading. In fact, he complained about it being too lopsided and unfair. He said the story had too much violence, the bad guys were winning, the good guys were losing and the plot was missing.

God answered Habakkuk about the story being written:

  • It’s an astonishing and wonderful story! (Hab. 1:5). God seemed to be saying “Don’t let your shallow observations skew your thinking about what I am up to.”
  • It’s an epic story involving millions of people! (Hab. 1:6-11). You are a part of something big! You have a part to play in a drama that includes the entire world.
  • It’s a story to be written down so others can be inspired! (Hab. 2:2-3). Take time to ponder the story being written of your life. It is filled with meaning and significance.
  • It’s important to play your part no matter what it requires! (Hab. 2:1). Sometimes the plot line is so overwhelming, complex or obscured that all you can do is “stand at your guard post and station yourself on the wall” looking across the horizon.

If you read to the end of the book (Hab. 3:17-18), Habakkuk had a major heart change in how he viewed the story of his life. He said “I will rejoice in God,” “God is my strength,” and God “makes me walk on high places” (conveying the image of walking up a steep mountain path without stumbling).

God is writing down some incredible plot lines in the story of your life. It’s important to keep turning the pages and avoid being cowered by fear or disappointment in the way it reads at the moment.

We must trust our Divine co-author as the plot twists and turns, but which ultimately leads to a glorious ending.

That’s the kind of epic novel the world needs to read as it offers hope in this life and the promise of joy in the life to come.
