How often are you celebrating milestones when they occur?
They can be small or large accomplishments. What’s important is that they are recognized and remembered before the Lord. It’s even better when family and friends can be involved.
I was part of such an occasion recently when I asked my family and a small group of friends to join me so I could give them a copy of my new book, The Best Is Yet to Be–Moving Mountains in Midlife. I wanted to thank them for their encouragement and support during the three year writing process.
God showed up in so many ways that I also wanted the opportunity to credit Him for all He had done. It’s worth reflecting back over a long-term project to pull a “God list” together. The list notes the things that God did where His presence and work were evident in the midst of the situation.
Israel had a practice of piling up stones in a spot where God delivered them or accomplished a great work among them. You can see an example of this when they crossed the Jordan River into the Promised Land (Joshua 4:6-7).
Here are some benefits for this kind of celebration:
- People are encouraged. We love hearing stories of accomplishment and overcoming obstacles.
- People are reminded that God shows up. We need to see that God is actively at work in our lives.
- People benefit from being together. We can often feel alone and being invited to an event can lift our spirits.
- People see the importance of their life. We need to hear that our lives matter and made a difference.
How about you? Is there something that God has done which should be recognized and celebrated? 2015 would be a great year to plan something like this.
I’d love to hear about what you did. Let me know in the comments below.
