Clarifying God’s Call in Midlife

Recently, I participated in a deeply engaging retreat in the mountains above Colorado Springs. It was led by my friend, Gary Barkalow, who is the founder of TheNobleHeart.com. Nineteen men from around the country met to attend an event called a Base Camp Gathering.

It’s designed to help men gain clarity about what God is saying and calling them to accomplish. Some, like me, came in with a fair amount of uncertainty.

Over the course of the weekend, it was surprising how much ground could be covered in a short period of time. Meeting with a group of men who were intent on being real and grappling with core issues accelerated the progress.

I left the gathering at a different place than where I had arrived. At the start I saw myself in a contracting circle of events that were confronting my life. At the end I realized instead of contracting, it could actually be expanding, if I saw the situation from God’s perspective.

In midlife, it can be confusing to narrow down what God is calling us to do. Especially when problems crowd in from many directions. If this is your present experience, here are some thoughts to consider:

  • Gaining clarity about God’s calling in midlife is within reach, not an endless mystery.
  • God is extremely motivated in helping clarify our calling and assignments.
  • It is possible to greatly accelerate the discovery process with a little intentional effort.
  • Reading Gary Barkalow’s book, It’s Your Call, would be an important next step. Even better, take a risk and invite some others to read it with you and give each other feedback.
  • To further accelerate the progress, sign up attend a Noble Heart Calling Retreat or Base Camp Gathering.

Are you clear about what God is calling you to do?

I’d be interested in hearing where you’re at in this area and what has helped clarify God’s calling.
